Satyavati was the beautiful daughter of King of fishermen.Alongwith fishing community used to take people from one shore of Yamuna river to another. As long time was spent amongst fishes. ,her body had fish odour&so she was called MatsyaGandha too.Once sage Parashar came to go across the river. He was bewitched by this young beautiful woman &then&there he made love to her. Before leaving the boat he gifted her, that took away fishysmell &she had celestial fragrance to her.Now she was called YojanaGandha, the one whose perfumed smell spreads to long distances.

Onceking Shantanu while roaming around smelled her, fell in love with her& that's the moment history took it's turn.Further events are already described in other answers. If Shantanu wasn't a prey to her beauty & haunting smell,Bhishma hadn't taken the oath of celebacy to fulfill father's passion & obsession probably a different dynasty with different story.
